A LAN may have the following components:
a) Database Server,
b) Terminals for users,
c) Devices that are to be shared, such as high speed or specialty printers, mass storage devices, etc.
d) Bridge to other LANs.
The database server, generally, stores the database for common use by various users who communicate through their terminals. The database server also serves the purpose of application server.
The shared printers and storage devices such as hard disks and magnetic tapes are accessible to users through the server. If the enterprise has other LANs also installed, these LANs may be connected to each other with the help of devices called bridges.
