colostomy

Colostomy is a surgical treatment completed to create an artificial opening in the abdominal wall. Within this process, no more colon (colon) is pulled with the opening to create a stoma. A pouch is then put on top of stoma to gather waste products eliminated in the body. In some cases, the colon gets damaged, obstructed or impacted by diseases. Colostomy is recommended if the person has some severe problems with an area of the colon.

A loop colostomy involves temporary procedure in which a loop of colon is pulled towards the abdominal skin to produce a stoma with two openings. In other type of colostomy which is named end colostomy, the colon is pulled out into the abdominal skin surface to form a stoma with single opening. This is a permanent procedure.

Colostomy is done in two ways namely laparotomy (open operation) and laparoscopy (Keyhole operation). Keyhole operation is a favorable choice because the patient can recover quickly and also the risks involved will also be reduced. Colostomy is performed with general anaesthesia and therefore it may cause some issues with breathing or reactions to medicines. Other complications associated with the surgery are bleeding, problems for nearby organs, infection, blockage or prolapse of stoma, skin irritation and opening of surgical wound.

Colostomy surgery is performed mainly on patients suffering from bowel cancer. Sometimes a part of colon is taken away and temporary stoma is created. When the colon is cured, it is then joined again to remove the colostomy. However, permanent colostomy is usually recommended if rectum is taken away completely. Another condition involving colostomy is diverticulitis. Small pouches observed in the wall of the colon get infected and swollen to result in high temperature, vomiting and stomach pain.

Temporary colostomy is recommended for stopping diverticulitis by taking out the affected part of the colon. Swelling of digestive tract known as Crohn's disease is another reason to do temporary or permanent colostomy. Bowel obstruction due to constipation, cancer and hernia could also require colostomy. Colostomy may be the last strategy to bowel incontinence, a condition by which person cannot control the bowel motions. Moreover, colostomy is performed if the part of the colon is severely injured.

Three to seven days of hospital stay is usually recommended after the surgery. Before leaving the hospital, the doctor will explain about diet and how to take care of the colostomy. It is essential to follow every instruction carefully to prevent potential complications. Sometimes, it might be challenging to adjust a life after conducting a colostomy. However the patient could get used to it with time and appear forward to normal activities without hesitation.
